Dell Dimension 4700 Lost Sound

December 1, 2010 at 06:54:37
Specs: Windows XP
Our Dell Dimension 4700 lost its sound about 2 weeks ago. I have tried many things, updated the audio drives via the vendor on this site, removed the drives and restarted the computer hoping the soundcard would be autodetected and start the sound again. Nothing has worked. Is this a lost cause and time to move to a new computer or is there something that can be done?

... click here and do as suggested (#1)

... also download System Spec (freeware)

... download @ bottom of page open/run it and click onto sound icon and run through and check the settings and try the sound tests

Hi mavis007,
Thanks for the response. I tried devmgmt.msc, but no yellow markers. Then I tried mmsys.cpl and mute was not checked and under the Audio tab the SoundMax Audio was listed as the default.

I downloaded the System Spec and tried the sound tests. The only sounds during the test came from the system and not through the speakers. At least the system makes sound. However, that doesn't give me the sound we used to have from videos viewed on the computer.

Is there anything else you can suggest?

"...that doesn't give me the sound we used to have from videos viewed on the computer..."

... so you have sound through your system (..works with headphones?)

... suggest you plug the speakers into headphone socket.

... perhaps try system restore selecting a restore point date prior to the problem.

Mavis,
Thanks but the furthest my system restore goes back is 11/21/10, the date I started working on this problem. I thought there would be dates back further, but no. Anything else we can try?

Also about my description of the sound, the system only beeps on command when running through diagnostics. Other than that, no media player, no Word assistant noises, no sound from an application at all. I don't even know where to plug in the speakers instead of a headset. The speakers are plugged into the jack in the back of the computer and powered up.

... green/yellowish socket, you can also alter the month(s) of the restore you know!

... but it wo'nt make any difference if you hav'nt plugged the speakers into the correct socket.

Hi mavis007,
We have the speakers plugged into the correct jack in the back of the desktop since it is color coded and was working for years. We even bought new speakers thinking that was the problem prior to seeing so many with no sound due to an unknown MicroSoft glitch. We did find the headphone jack on the front of the desktop and still no sound.

When I used the system restore wizard it wouldn't let me go back past November. Is there a way to get the calendar to go back further so I can pick a date prior to our sound problems?

Hi mavis007,
We did move the speaker connection to the headphone jack and went to a youtube video to try for sound. No sound.

My system restore was similar to your picture and the system restore starts at December and only allows me to go back to November with the 21st as the earliest among the bolded dates. The left month arrow grays out so I can't go back to October at least. Also 11/21 is not back far enough.

I do have the original disks that came with the computer, should I re-install anything? If so how would I re-install the original sound drivers?

... ok so the volume is not muted the slider volume control is "up"(?) Doing "mmsys.cpl" speaker settings "advanced" is set to speakers(?)

The only sounds during the test came from the system and not through the speakers. At least the system makes sound

... I'm not sure as to what you mean by the above statement. From where is the sound (what system sounds?) coming from?

... is this a fresh install of xp? as it should show more restore points

... @ bootup tap the <Delete> <key> to enter your bios and look for "onboard integrated Audio" is that disabled? alter to suit (save settings on exit of bios)

Hi mavis007,
Yes the speaker setting is set correctly.

The sound comes from the CPU/desktop and only upon test commands from system spec.

I tried tapping the Delete key on set up and no bios came up. How else can I access the bios so I can check?
