Can't restore C: drive

Sony Vaio vgn-nw310f/b notebook

Specs: vista
After turn on laptop, the screen appears in DOS format, and recommend launch repair program after I choose restore C: drive, the error message appears "Could not obtain the target drive letter" and then " The task filed, error -1", I can't open anything else, just turn of pushing and hold power button.

possible hard disk failure, you need a bootable cd of seatools by seagate or another hard drive diagnostic tool from the manufacturer to test your hard disk. It would be wise to see if the drive can be read by another computer to get your data before you do too much testing.
