cant burn dvd's ???

Specs: Windows Vista
Ok so my computer does not recognise dvd-r disks at all and i am clueless as to why. i can make cd's and so on but just not dvd's. when i put in a dvd-r disk in the drive weather its blank or not the computer will not recognise it??

does anyone know why and how i can fix the problem??

Are you sure your have a DVD drive that has the ability to burn DVD's? Also do you have DVD burning software?

Yes im pretty sure it should be capable of burning dvd's. the front of the drive has dvd written on it and when i go into computer the drive is named, DVD RW Drive (E:). And what do you mean by dvd burning software? i have DVD Video Soft free studio manager, NTI CD & DVD-maker 7, windows media player, Windows dvd maker and a dvd converter. Do any of those count?
