Solved Can't access cloned copy of Windows XP

January 11, 2014 at 20:30:31
Specs: Windows XP
My Compaq Presario’s BIOS says “Factory Installed OS = Vista. I cloned a (known) viable Windows XP OS into it, but find I can't access it.

I feel certain that factory installed Vista is blocking my access to Windows XP.

So, how can I boot into my cloned Windows XP OS on this pc?

Thanks, Bob DeCote

You cloned it from the same computer (or one with identical hardware)? It is not in use on the original computer? Unless the answer is "yes" to both these it won't work on the new computer.

Hi iJack,

Let me start by thanking you for your prompt response. I appreciate your taking the time and trouble to respond to my booting question; but, I’m afraid you haven’t hit the nail on the head, at least, I don’t think so, – so please let me give you a few more details.

As far as using the same cloning program, that’s out – I use only a Spotmau CD for all of my clones, and I’ve never had a problem with it. As far as cloning into identical computers, I did a Belarc System Analysis of both my Compaq Presario CQ50 laptops and found that both are Notebook PC F.07, and both use a Wistron 360A 08.36 mother board (key considerations).

The only differences that I see that may be “possibly significant” (?) are that (a) whereas one is a CQ50-210US, the other is a CQ50-110US, and (b) the one that has Windows XP cloned into it, but which I can’t boot up, has a BIOS that reads (as I said) “Factory Installed OS = Vista”. If my incompatibility is due to the 210US vs 110US difference, I guess I’m sunk – I can’t change that. But, if it’s due to an originally installed Vista OS, I’m hoping there’s a software way around that. – Any further suggestions?

Thanks again, BobD

Well, the processors are different so it's quite likely that other components are too.

It would be much easier to install from DVD or USB stick. And don't forget that you'll need a separate product key.
