Trying to back up files from HD to desktop, when copy and pasting some files are not accessible due to an I/O device error or comes up with error code 0x8007045d.

Tried on different USB ports with same result.

any help really appreciated.

Check the Format type of the external device: Windows 7 32 bit may not transfer large files to a device using Fat32 format. So, if I wanted to use my computer to transfer the file, reformat the external drive to NTFS. Let me know if this helps.

Hi thanks for your reply - my OS is vista home premiuim 64bit. but the external HD is FAt32, just wanting to know whether the data on the external HD would still be safe if I reformatted it to NTFS?

Not if its reformatted, can you move it to the computer from the External Drive?

No unfortunately as the external HD won't let me access the files due to the I/O error it also won't let me copy/paste onto neither my laptop or desktop in order to back the files up.

Although last night sometimes it would let me copy and paste fine, and then there would be a glitch and i won't be able to access them again.

Any ideas?
