Specs: Windows Vista, Unknown
I am trying to install Vista on my Acer Aspire M5640 and during installation it says I need the CD/DVD driver, and to insert a floppy or flash drive containing it and to install it. Can anyone tell me where to find this driver, or at least what it's called.

It shouldn't be asking for a CD/DVD driver during Windows Vista Setup unless that particular make/model of CD/DVD drive is incompatible with Vista (ie not natively supported on Vista Setup). That existing drive will work after Windows is actually up and running, but not for Windows Setup.

Since CD/DVD drive manufacturer's don't supply drivers any more (not since Windows 95/98 was discontinued), the only remedy I know of is to fit a different make of CD/DVD drive.

Was that PC not supplied with Acer Recovery Discs? If you use those to re-install Windows Vista you shouldn't have that problem. The problem only arises when you want to install from scratch using a Microsoft disc like you're trying to do.

I decided to just try copying a driver from a different computer. We'll see how that works.

It didn't work. No It has no recovery discs. It had Linux or something on it before and the person who had it deleted all the backup drivers and everything to do with windows... so now I am having troubles. I'm thinking if I put the windows installation onto a flash drive and use that to install windows then the CD drive will work. Will see how it goes.
