XP won't recognize new hard drive on notbk

January 25, 2011 at 10:53:27
Specs: Windows XP
Hi All,

I have hp notebook that had vista on it. Recently hard drive crashed, so I replaced with a new one. Compatiple (SATA), I checked.

Linux has no problem recognizing the drive, formatting it, etc.

I am trying to put XP on it and it won't recognize the drive.

Quaestion:

This is considered brand new installation since this drive is new as well as XP was never istalled. Do I need soe sort of drivers insalled first so that my xp disk recognizes the new drive.

I even formatted half of it to NTFS (from OpenSuse linux). Still no luck.

What am I missing. Please help. Thanks

I would suggest to install windows xp from a slipstreamed installation cd, including sp3.
This is, because the original windows xp cd did not support AHCI controller setting.

Another solution could be, to switch the controller setting in the system BIOS from AHCI to IDE.

thank you paulsep.

I enter BIOS, but I don't see a lot of options besides changing the boot sequence and couple other things. Really not much there. I hit f something (forgot) at start up and it gives me a few options including BIOS settings, I choose that, but again not much there, for instance I couldn't find an option to aet auto detect mode for HD. What can I be doing wrong.

Maybe there is no such option, but most do have.
Anyway, you can use a slipstreamed installation cd, including sp3,
or, if you got a driver disk, you can press F6 key during the installation process and install the controller driver at this stage.
But, and that's mostly a problem, win xp installation only accepts drivers on floppy disk.

Well again, thank you.

Thats sucks (xp and floppy I mean)

So last question is I actually need a controller driver. Without it no go ?

Where would I get one, from HP (laptop manufacturer)?
Or from other source?
New drive is WD and they state on their website that

You only need the driver on a floppy disk.

All the notebooks do mostly have preinstalled windows version and it's strongly suggested, to create a set of Recovery DVDs, to be able to recover the notebook, even if the harddisk is corrupt and must be renewed.
Don't you have such DVDs?

I know :(

I was careless enough not to create them.

Will Vista CD help (since vista was installed previously on this machine)?

So I will have vista cd I believe tonight, will i still need a controler driver?
