Will not boot from hdd, or dvd drive

Specs: Windows XP
Ok, I have a problem with one of our custom built pc's we bought of craigslist. I also do a lot of technical work but at this time I'm at a loss trying to figure out exactly what's wrong. I received various threats detected through avg free which I removed. Everything was fine until it popped up again for trojan viruses, the computer went crazy momentarily before a few porn links popped up on the desktop. After that the computer shut down, and was unable to boot. I've tried various troubleshooting and have had no luck. I tried changing/resetting the bios settings, unplugging and trying dif. hardware such as the hdd, ram, dvd drive ect. etc. The computer Posts at startup and appears everything is ok, when it tries to load windows a bunch of garbage comes on the screen and that is where it hangs up. By garbage i mean dif. letters, numbers, and symbols of all dif. colors across a black screen. The hdd's are good, I have swapped them out into my pc and retrieved information off of them. Ive tried installing with various versions of windows with the same thing every time. Everything has been running good until the virus, and the hdd's check out ok. What would cause this? And how can I fix it? I noticed when i took out the system hdd and set the secondary hdd as the master it posted saying no os found. When i try to reformat and install windows it deosn't even get to the part where it says press any key to boot from cd.. Please if anyone can help me with this issue than please contact me asap.. Thanks for your time!

Try this ISO image, burn it on CD, boot with this CD, click update, then configure on what to do on found infection.
When finished, reboot system and see what happens.
