Specs: Dos 7.10
I was learning something about design operating system and running a '.com' file in Dos on VirtualBox however this pop up:EMM386:Unrecoverable privileged operation error #`a6 -press Enter to reboot

If you are seriously learning about operating systems and want to run a .com executable, I strongly suggest you install FreeDOS, the Open Source MS DOS clone.

DOS 7.10 is a hacked version of DOS since it was planned as kernel for Windows 98 and never released as a separate system. Be aware inside a virtual machine exceptions unknown to real environments may happen. So it is better to rely upon a clean operating system not to say FreeDOS offers its sources to investigate its structure.

About your problem it may be caused by your executable, by the virtual environment, by the hacked DOS version or... by a bad star.

Post back contents of your config.sys.

Doesn't seem to be a specific fix but, in general, it has to do with the placement of lines in config.sys:



Those have to do with specific hardware but the cure was to edit config.sys.

If you haven't already done so you should probably run MEMMAKER. If you don't have it, it's included in the OLDDOS download here:
