can an old laptop be used for dos I have a dell but i think it is too fast

Yes MS-DOS 5/6 and IBM PC-DOS 5 and later will run on most x86 hardware, even PC's with 64bit CPU's

Though personally would try to find IBM PC-DOS 2000 as it was the last retail version to be released.

The speed issues only relate to **-DOS software, which can be overcome with software like MoSlo & SlowDown.

There is also a free version of DOS that can be ran on anything with a pentium or newer. It is called Free DOS and as the name says it is free. It is also compatible with all MS-DOS programs.

Pentium 4s - The processors for the rest of us.

FreeDOS supports FAT32 and offers many useful improvements. It is worth to take a look at.
