old DOS backup restore

Specs: DOS
Hi,

i have a lot of data backed-up with some DOS utility from 1991 to 1993. Every disk contains only one file PCBACKUP.00x (PCBACKUP.001, PCBACKUP.002, etc.), but no other file. The names of the files led me to the Central Point PC tools Backup utility, but it doesnt work. When i tryed to make a test backup (with v6 a v9) the disks contains another suplementary files (PCBACKUP.dir & PCBACKUP.inf) which looks like, that contains info about the original structure. Could some of you help me how to restore the backups?

Most DOS-based backups rely on the catalog files to be sound (integrity-wise) for the restore to be successful. As you've apparently discovered, those files are usually on the last disk in the series (which is how the program knows how many disks in the backup and where the files are located on each disk--a restore will ask for the last disk to be inserted first). Thus if the last disk is somehow damaged, restoring the backup won't be possible. You mention that there's a "PCBACKUP.inf" file on the catalog disk. Since most ".inf" files are normally associated with Windows, could this have been from a Windows-based version of CP Backup?

well, there are no other files on the last disks, even on backups with 1 disk only. the .inf and .dir files were created by a sample backup, which i did using DOS 6.22 without any windows installed.
