Specs: Windows XP, ? can't get in to see
Computer makes a funny "grinding" noise upon start up (like a disc is in the drive, but all drives are empty), then the noise gradually winds down. Message on screen "Drive 0 not found, strike F1 to continue, F2 to run set up utility." I press F1. Message on screen, "No boot device available. Strike F1 to retry boot, strike F2 for set up utility."

Was it working OK prior to the noise? Sounds like it may be a bad hard drive. But check in the F2 setup utility and see if it finds the hard drive. You may need to open the case and make sure the the hard drive's data cable is tightly connected and in good condition.

I had that problem when replacing a 5 1/4 floppy drive. I accidentally put the connector on the MotherBoard backwards. when i booted it up, the read/write head would drive to the front, stick there, and grind itself for about 15 seconds, then it would say "ERROR: Floppy not ready. F1 to continue, F2 to run setup utility." not the Hard Disk, but similar. Copy DAVEINCAPS though. check the BIOS, look for the HDD, possibly a bad Hard Drive.
