Merge files with pathanmes

Specs: Windows Vista
Hi all,

I have recently come across these useful windows commands TYPE and COPY but having limited knowedlge of windows as I am more used to the CAT command on the unix I would like to know how to use absolute paths with these commands for example I have:

TYPE myfile.txt > new_file.txt

how can I specify a pathname for the source and destination areas with the filename??

type C:\path\myfile.txt>C:\newpath\new_file.txt

... (C:\=drive)

.....and if the paths are variables what is the format then?
