Install DOS to a clean drive

May 27, 2010 at 10:44:27
Specs: win98se
I have a clean 1 GB HD on a 486 Pentium laptop and want to install DRDOS first then
Win98SE.
How do I install dos,then win98se?

I have no floppy drive but burned an iso image bootable CD,It works but I
can't figure how to install to the C drive.Also I can't find a config.sys or
autoexec.bat file.I assume I need these to install dos.

I also burned an iso image CD of a win98se start up floppy but when it boots
it does not bring up a selection menu.I do get CD support but no executables
to help in my efforts.

When I run setup on the w98se full disk I get a message requires "largest
executable program size at least 442368 bytes to run.

I would like to boot the c drive to dos with utilities but run win98se when
needed.

I've read all I can find on the web but most of it is clear as mud.
Any help is appreciated as I am at a standstill now.

First, do you absolutely need DR DOS? If not, just use the dos that comes with 98.

Second, do you have a 98 installation cd (not just a boot disk)? If so, it's probably bootable and you don't need a bootdisk. If you don't have a 98 installation cd then you're not going to be able to install 98 anyway.

The error message usually means the hard drive hasn't been partitioned and formatted (or maybe just not formatted).

OK, I see you have the installation cd. Boot up with it but don't start the installation. Run FDISK at the dos prompt, answer Yes to large disk support. Then remove any existing partitions with option 3. (You say it's 'clean' so maybe there are none.) Then choose option 1 to create the dos partition. Choose to use all the space for the partition. When it's done, reboot with the 98 cd.

At the dos prompt type FORMAT C: and enter. When it's done formatting you can install 98.

If you do need DR DOS then you'll need some kind of boot loader. I'm not sure which OS you need to install first when using one of those. Again, I'd suggest just using win 98 dos. Both should have the same capabilities.
