How Does DOS Use Memory?

Anybody have a link to a very thorough explanation of how DOS uses memory?

If I load everything high, don't I still have almost 1GB of extended memory?

What's a practical way to manage memory if I have lots of drivers and other programs I want to keep resident in memory?

As always, the Wikipedia article on the subject ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOS_me... ) is a good place to start.

You need memory management software. Here's some info on the most popular--QEMM:

Generally 'upper memory' for drivers is located between the first 640 K and 1 meg of ram. Memory above that is available for expanded and extended memory. QEMM may be able to allocate it better. But it's unlikely you'll find any memory management software that'll be able to use all 1 gig.
