Getting Bernoulli Transportable RCD to work

July 18, 2010 at 12:51:13
Specs: DOS
Hi, I've posted questions here before and your responses have been very helpful. I need to revive an old database in Dbase III-plus, DOS-driven. I have on a 90MB Bernoulli Transportable diskette, and I'm trying to access it. I've re-installed DOS version 6.2 and have installed (I think) the RCD software to drive the Bernoulli box. However when I start my computer it get one of two error messages:

1. "No RCD drives responding" with verify option turned on at installation;
2. "Error - RCD Adapter was not found." without verify option turned on at installation;

When I get to the C:\> prompt and type in "RCD" I cannot get it to respond. An error message like "rcd.sys is not installed; RCD utilities Version 7.01 aborted" comes up. Is "RCD" the right command to use to start the RDC program? I cannot remember because it's been almost 15 years since I last used the database.

I am trying to revive a human rights violation database for Guatemala, which will be used by students and institutions, and I will appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you very much!

Paul

It's been many years since I used a Bernoulli box, but if I remember correctly you accessed it like a regular floppy drive, just Change Directory to what ever the drive letter.

I'm pretty sure it used a SCSI adapter.

As for your error messages, sorry, I have no idea.

You might try posting in the DOS forum, someone there might remember more.

For what it's worth, found this comment which is three months old (it's from an Australian site):

Sounds like the poster has some knowledge of how to get the box running again, you may be able to contact him and see if he can help.

The Bernoulli must not be connected right or is bad or you're using the wrong software. Apparently rcd.sys is trying to load from config.sys but the device isn't found so it doesn't load. Then when you try to access the drive you get the rcd.sys isn't installed error.

Now that's what I call a sticky situation

Hi Mike and Dave,

Thanks for your help and, Dave, thanks again your help a few months ago has brought me to this stage, which is closer to my goal than before. I shall follow what both of you suggest. I'll check the cables/attachements, clean them a bit, then re-attach them all. There was some recess during the last few months trying to access my data, but I must get this done and will constantly try anything I can. Thanks again for your help and I'll let you know what happens very soon, AND will probably have more questions!

Sincerely,

Paul

agreeing with Dave, it sounds as if the driver(s) have not been installed correctly (or not at all) and thus the device is not found.

Generally these types of devices came with an installation program, on a floppy, that updated config.sys and/or autoexec.bat during the process for you.

Is the Bernoulli drive internal or external?

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I believe I installed the RCD software properly since I went through the process and I can see the config.sys and autoexec.bat files installed, on the screen. Funny thing is, when I do the "edit" command in DOS with those files, just a bunch of gobbledy-gook is displayed.

The external devices (hardware) is also attached, I believe properly; not many options there. I've tried re-attaching etc. but nothing works so far. Maybe they "died", I don't know but I'm asking to purchase an old but working Bernoulli Parallel Port Adapter/cable on Craigslist, but nobody has answered after 1 week.

What I may have to do is edit the DOS config.sys file (?) - I think I have to do that and will try that and will get back to you.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Paul
