CF-IDE Adapter wrong size

January 10, 2015 at 14:08:18
Specs: MS-DOS
Hi, I bought a cf-ide adapter to use on my Compaq Armada 1700 (the hdd died).
I've formatted my CF card (8gb) in several ways on another PC with a CF slot (Gparted, DOS), but every time i put the CF on the adapter fdisk detects the disk, but its size is different: sometimes 500MB, 3GB, 7GB, and the the disk is always unallocated space. If I create a partition with fdisk it doesn't give errors, but when I reboot the partition is gone.
Any help would be appreciated.

What dos version are you booting with? You'd need a fat32 capable version--windows 98 dos or freedos, something like that.

Make sure the connection is tight. I had a drive that kept losing its partitioning and it was just a loose cable.

I've never used those adapters. Does the drive need to be configured in bios setup or does the adapter use a separate controller?

That's a fairly old computer. I assume there's some incompatibility with it using that adapter. When you bought it was any mention made of hardware requirements?

All in all it'd probably be easier to replace the bad drive than try to make the adapter work.

Thank you for your answer.
I'm using DOS 6.22 or Windows 98 boot disk, but making a partition < 2GB.
The adapter is very simple, and the bios recognizes the CF as an IDE hard drive, but it doesn't get the correct size (like fdisk), and there's no way of changing it manually.
The adapter was a cheap one I bought online.
