Cant format floppy disk on DOS 5.0 Computer..

October 12, 2010 at 14:04:42
Specs: Windows XP / DOS 5.0, 1gb / 640kb
I just recently bought DOS 5.0 for my old Toshiba T3100 laptop tat was made in the 80's. I got the laptop in hopes of playing the old games like Gold Rush or Police Quest. However, I messed up and deleted the partition (didn't have the backup disks, so I bought DOS 5.0).

When I tried to install DOS 5.0 it told me that there was not enough space on the hard drive to install it directly so i would have to boot it up using floppy disks that it formatted and copied for me. Now I can only load DOS 5.0 via floppy disks.

I tried to format a new/unused 1.44mb HD floppy disk (which are the ones i used to put the bootable files on when i installed DOS 5.0) using the DOS 5.0 shell, it gave me this error:

"Error creating temp file on drive A: - Invalid Path"

I dont know how to get around this. I think it is because i need the "Shell/Help" disk in there to continue running the DOS 5.0 Shell.

What I am trying to do is put the files for "Gold Rush" and "Police Quest" onto a floppy and run it on my DOS 5.0.

I am currently trying to resolve this issue using Windows XP Prof. Laptop

Help please! Thanks!

Amrian

If you used MS-DOS 6.22 you could create a RAMDRIVE

http://2dos.homepage.dk/batutil/hel...

http://www.computing.net/answers/do...

Even with one floppy drive on the old Laptop you should be able to boot off Disk 1 and then format etcetera, MS-DOS supports disk swapping !

Oh, ok. I dont know if this computer can run 6.22. If so, is there anyway to get it without paying for it? And will it be bootable from a 1.44mb HD floppy disk that is made on windows xp? Sorry, i've tried so many things and lost hope, which is why im here ha ha.

Oh, any ideas about the game situation?

ok, now i tried to format my floppy in the command prompt, but when i am in "A:\>" it tells me "General failure reading drive A", however if i go to "C:\>" it tells me "Bad command or file name" - when trying to use "format a:" after taking out the start-up floppy and inserting a new unformatted floppy.

Ok, I figured out how to format my floppies. I just run the DOS 5.0 setup disks and at the start it formats my disk before it uses it. When it's done, I just flop it out and it worked. Now... i just need to figure a way to put my game on it in windows, since the disk is smaller (so windows xp thinks), it needs more space to fit the game.
