why wont my memory card go into my camera

Specs: Windows XP, 1.2 gig 1gig ram
I just bought a refurbished olympus e-420. I got 2 new memory cards but they only go in half way. I try'ed my wife's from her camera and it did not work. What can I do? Thanks.... Junior

Sure there may not be a broken-off SD card (or something else) lodged in the slot? It's unfortunately a more common occurrence than one would think; and being that it's refurbished would only heighten the suspicion. Using a bright light, see if there's any obstruction in the slot.

I see that camera use Compact Flash cards. Are you sure that you are putting them in the right way round? Check the manual to see which way they should be inserted. CF cards are keyed and cannot be inserted fully the wrong way round (to prevent damage). Also, they need slight additional pressure for the final part of the insert to reset the eject mechanism. But don't push too hard if there's an obvious obstruction!

If all else fails, take it to a camera shop rather than risking damage.
