Solved What is the best Free video editing software for Windows 7?

July 11, 2015 at 09:14:30
Specs: Windows 7
I use Windows movie maker 2.6. But while saving AVI file for more than 20 or 25 clips only, it does not save in my computer and crashes. Moreover, it saves only in WMV format which is remarkably lossy. So I want a better Free software which provides more saving formats to choose. Also, please suggest the formats which are less lossy than WMV and in which Free video editing software I can get that format to save.

WMM shouldn't be crashing. It might be worth uninstalling it from "Control Panel > Programs and Features" then downloading and installing a new copy from here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/dow...

I don't know how to change the compression in WMM (assuming you can). It's normally a matter of selecting the type of Save from the list, which gives varying sizes and qualities. Obviously best quality is a large file and lowest quality is a small file.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

There are many video formats such as MPEG2, MPEG4, Flash video, MOV, etc. As far as loss goes, any format can be adjusted for file size or quality. WMV is not remarkably lossy, you are just saving it as a lower quality. When you save a video, just about every video editor will let you chose the amount of compression to use. The more it's compressed the smaller the file size will be but it will result in lower quality.

Look here for more info on video codecs - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video...

Just an aside but I have noticed that after editing using Windows movie maker, even if saved at the highest quality, there is a noticeable loss of quality compared to the original.

Dear THX 1138
Thank you very much for your prompt response. However, unfortunately there is neither any option to set any format else other than WMV nor the quality of WMV in Windows Movie Maker's saving option. So, please suggest me how to choose the amount of compression in WMM.
2. Could you please suggest anything on my other question where I wanted to know about any other better Free video editing software than WMM where I may have option to select format and amount of compression and more capacity to accommodate more volume so that it will not crash to save like WMM?

Dear Derek,
Thank you for your reply. I'll try with the given link by you to install a new copy of WMM and inform you the report in time.

However, if you select any type of saving option in WMM, you'll be compelled to save it in WMV only as it's the only format created by Microsoft. So, whatever the size and quality you select, you'll be driven to WMV only.

OK, the options are more limited than I said (I use too many different programs LOL).

However when I use "Save Movie" I get the options of wmv and mp4 (compressed).

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
