Missing markers in image files! Saved as jpeg but no headers

February 6, 2012 at 13:11:32
Specs: Windows 7
I have 8-10 images and a video that I am unable to open anywhere. I've gone through more forums and Google searches than I can count, but to no avail!

The images are on a micro SD 32gb Kingston flash card and were taken with a Canon Powershot. Immediately after taking the pictures we were able to view them on the camera, but soon after a message displayed saying "Image not available" when trying to view them again. On the computer, no preview is available either. File size looks to be right, however I did notice that the date saved was incorrect.

I've used IrfanView, GIMP, ClikView, File Repair, Pandora Recovery, Stellar Phoenix JPEG Repair, Windows Photo Viewer, and even good ol' MS Paint. None of these programs have successfully opened the files, even when attempting to open as something other than JPEG or automatically detecting the file type.

I was able to determine that the damaged images are lacking a JPEG header, and the HEX information does not match other images on the memory card from the same camera that open perfectly fine. In fact, one program determined that the files were not actually JPEG, but I'm not sure how that could be as every other picture I've taken with that camera has been jpg.

No camera settings were changed and no formatting was done to the memory card from the set of working pictures to the damaged set, so I'm truly at a loss for what is wrong!

I can also upload a damaged and a working image file for example if anyone thinks that would be of use! Thank you so much for your help, these photos (and one video) are of my recent engagement, so they are extremely valuable to me!

I have nothing to offer in the way of repairing them, but it's apparent the memory card is failing. I would not rely on this card for future use.
