Solved have a compaq pressaro and it has integrated video.

Specs: Windows 7, 3gb
I went to install a new power supply and found that the original had a 20 pin connector in a 24 pin on the MB. there was also a 4 pin on the motherboard separate
if i installed the new power supply that had a 24 pin connector to the 24 pin on the MB and also connected the separate 4 pin would this cause the new non-integrated pci-e video card not to be recognized or have no signal?

The most likely reason for the PCIe GPU to not be recognised is:

a) it's not getting sufficient power because the PSU is not powerful enough for it.

b) the GPU may need additional power from the PCIe cables coming from the PSU but you haven't connected them to the GPU.
