Solved DVD recorded from TV wont play in PC

My grandfather is interested in local history and has been given a DVD+R disc containing a programmed recorded from the TV. This plays fine in his Sony DVD player. He has asked me if I could make a copy of this DVD for him.

I took the DVD home and tried to run it on my Dell desktop running windows 7 but the disc would not play. Windows saw it as a blank DVD. I booted into Ubuntu but again the disc was not recognised. I tried it in my normal Samsung DVD player and it spat it out with the message "cannot play this disc".

As the DVD does work in my Grandfathers DVD player does anyone know of a way I can make windows or linux make an exact image of the disc even though the operating system views it as blank?

Thanks

Best to do it on the original recorder. Takes a few minutes.

Was the disk finalized?

I suspect it wasnt finalised but was created on a sony DVD recorder ... which is why it plays in my grandad's sony DVD player but not on my Samsung or PC. Would the fact that it wasnt finalised mean my PC would see it as a blank disc?

An unfinalized disk has no end of file marker, that why it is seen as blank.

Working on the assumption that it is not finalised, is there a way for me to finalise it or would it need to be inserted into the DVD recorded that first created it for this to happen?
