How are you burning it? Are you just burning the disc as a data disk or are you using your burning software to create a properly formatted DVD video disc?

If you burned it as a video DVD on Nero, that was the correct way of doing it.

A couple of things to consider. What type od discs are you using? if you are using a DVD-RW (rewritable) that could be a problem. Many DVD players have issues reading those. There are also 2 types of writable DVD's, DVD+R and DVD-R. If you're using DVD+R try using DVD-R or vice versa. Not all players can read both formats. You might also try a different brand of disc.

"when i put the disc in for nero after it formatted it first it said it was an incorrect disc for the project"

You don't format the disc first, that would indicate you created a drag-to-disc (UDF format) type of format on the disc. That's probably why Nero said it was an incorrect disc for the project. All you should have had to do was fire up the video DVD creator part of Nero and use that to create the video DVD.

What was the exact message Nero gave you when it said you need to purchase additional things?

"I can burn it through wma"
Do you mean Windows Media Player? wma is an audio file format like mp3's, not a program.

Windows Media Player won't burn it in the correct format, it will just burn it as a data disc, which as you've experienced, doesn't work on all players.

Don't give up trying, sometimes it just takes a little patience and trial and error before you get the hang of it.

There is plenty of free DVD video creating software available out there. Do a Google search for DVD video creating software and you will find tons of stuff. Here's one to get you started.
