Do I need codecs?

Specs: windowsXP, 1.6ghz/1gig
I have a Snazzi legacy video capture card and sometimes when I go to view videos that I am about to capture on the computer, from the VCR, the picture goes black and white. I am not sure why this happens sometimes. It seems like for a while everything is colour and then after a time or should I say the next tape i load, black/white. Am I missing some codecs? I am using Movie Mill that the Snazzi(it is a miracle that they got the driver and software for me as most sites don't want to bother with their legacy devices) website sent me via the net with the driver and now i am trying vlc. OK I am not getting a good signal there either. There are lines. I just did a fresh install of windows and forgot what exactly I had on there before but this was an issue before too.
I have k-codec pack although I am not sure what version and I have never learnt how to use it. I read on one site that the results of what g-spot finds will tell me what codecs are needed but i don't know how to use that either. I am trying to find out what version of K-lite i have but as it is a pack I am not sure how to go about it.
If I am going down the wrong path can someone help steer me on the right one?

Try reseating the card. If it works sometimes and not others, it's more likely to be a hardware problem.

OK I reseated and using the same cassette it was still bad(the same). This is odd. The latest seems to be that it is this one vhs cassette that is giving me this trouble. I am taping from another vhs tape right now to the computer and the colour is good. Will experiment a bit more later tonight and see what happens. I have the vcr hooked up to the tv and am recording via the tv connections rather than the vcr connections but with that other cassette it didn't make a difference. On the tv screen everything looks great. Just wasn't good on the computer screen except now with a different cassette. Odd.

Ok well it seems that it is just certain vhs cassettes that don't work. Some things work well and some not. Could be that the vhs cassettes have just gotten too old. They show really well on the tv though so it is a shame the capturing process is different. Thanks anyway.
