Cannot copy/past or 'Insert' my image files

October 28, 2011 at 14:30:22
Specs: Windows XP, 2gig
I take digital images of documents on my Lumix camera and upload them to my PC into files kept in My Documents. Usually I can look at them as thumbnails and then right-click copy-paste them into word docs or emails, or excel for multi-sheet enlargements. Now they refuse to copy-paste or allow me to use the Insertfunction. I can still see them on the screen as thumbnails or enlargements; I can print them from the computer ; but when I try to copy/paste I either I just get the four little squares you use for resizing images with the file name in the middle, OR the paste button is just greyed out so it doesn't work. I have tried opening in Paint and savign with a new name but that makes no difference. If anyone can help I will be truly grateful. Oh, and I get asked what programme I would like to open the image in - none of which helps.

No, i haven't. That sort of thing scares me - I'm one of those (idiots) who is fine when a computer does what it is supposed to do, and then freaks out when it stops. I am in the middle of writing a book under really heavy time pressure, and though my hard drive is backed up every night to an external, I am scared of things going wrong that might, for example, lose my emails and my favourite place list - it has happened.
Late last night my son managed to get things to open in Paint and I was able to paste a map into Excel and print it, but Paint is a horrid programme. Do you think I run much risk of losing emails if I do a system restore, and will I have to reload all my software?
Sorry, I know I sound like a computer moron...I am grateful for your advice.

The only things I ever lost on a system restore are the critical updates....you just have to reload them
