below is a suggested fix which worked for some people with that problem, but since the problem may have different causes it may not work for you, but worth a try:

1. Go into "Device Manager."
2. Go to "Imaging Devices" and in there should be
"USB 2.0 UVC 1.3 WebCam"

4. Right click it and select "Uninstall"
5. After you uninstall, restart your computer
6. When your computer restarts, it should automatically install the WebCam again.

If the above doesn't help, it might be worth trying to eliminate as much as possible from the equation, leaving just the webcam itself.

For example, you could temporarily set Skype NOT to start with Windows and then reboot.

I don't use Yahoo Messenger but maybe there is a way to temporarily disable that too.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi and thanks for the answers. I tried the first option and it didn't work out; neither did the second answer. As I launch Lifeframe, the same message pops up: "the camera is used by another program". when I launch Yahoo Messenger, the camera is said not to be activated.
Please, I still need your help!!!

Anything else you can think of that could be using your webcam - chat programs for instance? One strong possibility is ASUS Smartlogon utility if you have that onboard.

Did the camera work and then suddenly start doing this?

Are there are any errors at all showing in Device Manager?

These are worth a shot:

Install CCleaner Slim (free) and run it - it clears out uneccessary junk.

Install MalwareBytes Free and run it, just in case it is a Malware issue.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I assume you have an Asus computer, in start menu search power4 gear and power4 gear hybrid should come up, click on that, what setting are you on, is camera enabled.

I am a hardware guy not a software guy but i try to help.

@Derek: I've gone through Google searching for solutions using the same words you proposed. The only good thing is that il lead me to this website! ;)
As for the camera, yes it did work and then suddenly started doing this
There are no error at all showing in Device Manager
I've installed CCleaner and run it. The computer is faster now, yet nothing new about the camera.
I've also downloaded MalwareBytes but have not run it, because I'm using Kaspersky Pure. I'm afraid of a clash between the two antiviruses

@jay_nar2012: I do indeed have an Asus computer. As I launched power4 gear hybrid, I found out that the setting I was on is "camera enabled"
Up till now, I still have the same problem

(Write this down somewhere)-To get in to safe mode, restart your computer, before windows loads ( 'windows is starting' bit) when there is a blinking cursor in the top left corner and just after the Asus logo has gone, keep pressing F8 until the advanced boot options come up, go to safe mode or safe mode with networking support then press enter.

Thats what just came out of my head (not literally).

Then see if your W-cam works.

I followed your instructions and got into safe mode with networking support.
The first thing is that as I launched life frame, the 1st pop-up windows said "No audio device found for lifeframe". And of course the audio icon on the bottom right of the screen was inactive. I have to say that for a while now, there are times when I start the computer and there's no sound heard, right from the opening session, although the audio icon is active. The solution I found was to shift to Ubuntu where the audio device has never failed me. Then, I could freely go back to Windows where I would hear sounds again .

So, as I closed that 1st pop-up, the familiar one "The camera is used by another program" was present.

Thanks for continuing to help me! ;)

I created an account and launched Lifeframe. Then a box popped up (with a countdown timer): ffdshow compatibility manager. It said: The application "vir-cam.exe" has made an attmept to load ffdshow. This dialog is shown because this application is not listed in the ffdshow whitelist or blacklist. Your choice will be applied to both audio and video, if both are used. Here were the options:
- Don't use ffdshow. (just this once)
- Don't use ffdshow (always)
- Use ffdsow (just this once)
- Use ffdshow (always)
There was also a box to tick: Report this exe file name via internet anonymously.
Then it showed: Explanation: ffdshow will be used if it is set to decode a format. The application will be added to "DirectShow control"->"Use ffdsow only in". And then, anothe box to tick: Don't ask me again.

As I made some research on the web, I found out that this application could be found in windows.7.codec.pack.v4.0.3.setup. So from 01.net, I downloaded and installed it to see whether it would work. But as I restarted the laptop and went through the new account to launch Lifeframe; I received the usual "The camera is used by another program"
