Can you tell me how I revert directly back to an original photo after editing it?

You can press the "M" key to see the master. Or you can click on the small gear in the upper, right-hand corner of the Adjustments tab and choose Reset All Adjustments to remove the adjustments you made. You can also check and uncheck individual adjustments by clicking on their respective check boxes.

Aperture only makes the changes permanent on an exported or printed image. Otherwise the master image is always still there.
