Does the DVR have its own mute or volume control? Are the cables connecting it to the TV in good condition and correctly attached?

Which sort of connection you are using is important. You should check the audio settings in the System menu to ensure that audio is enabled for the output you are using. Also, try a different cable and/or a different output on the recorder.

there is no mute function, the cables are in good condition, and correctly fitted, Yes I have tried a different cable, same thing. Also I tried different audio settings. I now think it either may have been dropped or banged against a wall while in transport.

Yeah, I guess if its settings and connections are OK then the problem must be with the recorder itself.

If you are using, for example, an HDMI cable, then there certainly is a function to mute the audio output. You need it in case you want to use a separate audio amplifier.

It really would help if you detailed which output connection you are using. As there are several different audio outputs on that recorder, if one isn't working you should be able to use another.
