Micro SD Card Problem

Specs: Windows 7
I have had a 1GB Micro SD Card for a few
years and have never had any problems
transferring data to and from my mobile phone
using a Micro SD USB 2.0 adapter.

This morning I wanted to transfer a few photos
onto my laptop (which is less than 3 weeks
old). I put the SD Card into the adapter as
normal and plugged it in. The message my
laptop gave me was that the device wasn't
installed correctly, and it wasn't recognising it.

The USB adapter suddenly became extremely
hot so I removed it. I let the SD card itself cool
down before putting it back into my phone. My
phone (LG Crystal) now isn't detecting it at all
and it is getting very hot in the phone.

One would guess that it has somehow and for
some unexplained reason died, but I was just
wondering if there was any way to fix it, and is
there any way I can retrieve all the data from
