I am a total computer iliterate, so if any answers are given-please speak in very plain english..!

I copy my music cd's to my hard-drive via windows media centre. Lately, when I play back the tracks, many of them have crackles and pops-like an old fashioned vinyl L.P.

Two things come to mind. You may have too much other stuff running when you are ripping your CD. close all the other programs running while you are ripping and see if that helps. The other problem may be your CD drive is going bad and having a hard time reading the discs.

Thanks, I think you could be right-I notice other people have posted this question on other blogs-I have ripped while the computer has all its programs closed, checked the speaker options, and I can't see that it would be software. The computer is not old either-they don't last long. Would a cleaning cd help, do you think?

Yes, you could try a lens cleaning CD. Speaker options would have nothng to do with your issue.
