converting laptop to media player only

February 4, 2011 at 00:00:25
Specs: N/A, celeron/2gb???
i'd like to convert a Toshiba Laptop Satellite 455- to a Multi Media Player sans all the other stuff
if possible, doing away with the OS altogether (obviously the Media Player would have to have the OS stuff built into it but all i want is the media player that is all)

do i have to create this program myself and get a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Computer Engineering to do it or is there an open source or commercial product out there alreadY???

I think they call that an iPod or iPad or maybe an MP3 player if audio only.
Apple TV or WD Live TV Media Player offers these features but to do it on a computer then you would need some way of telling the data on the hard disk how to be interpreted requiring an "Operating" System (OS).

Looks like you will be going to school.

I'm not sure about this, but how about installing FreeNAS, to make the pc a NAS server.

http://freenas.org/FreeNAS

Or, just install Serviio http://www.serviio.org/

I'm assuming you have a network connection on the TV.

If not get yourself a media player like WD or Mede8ter etc

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

"if possible, doing away with the OS altogether (obviously the Media Player would have to have the OS stuff built into it but all i want is the media player that is all)"

Why do away with the OS? I would leave Windows on the box and install a media player on top off it so you still have the file management that comes with Windows. Plus you can link it into I-Tunes and download directly from the internet.

My favorite Media Player is J-Audio...

http://www.jetaudio.com/download/

In addition you can install a Blue Ray player for your movies and all of the other goodies. Just leave the OS and download good media players.

Then hook the laptop to the Video of your TV.

correction: Ph.D. in Computer Programming, Computer Engineering and Computer Science

as far as me returning to school, that ain't gonna happen

i already know this can be done rather easily

i just haven't bumped into the

situation/program/software/person/department/company/school/organization
that can or has done it

before microsoft and the Internet being released to the public this is the sort of project computer geeks did every day at work and school

if anyone out there wants the gig it is theirs for the taking
i'm not offering any compensation though as the losers down here in florida don't like to pay for stuff
most of them even charge their employees up to 5 million dollars just for the "privilege" of being stalked, "rehabilitated"/ "reformed", abused used exploited, starved, maimed, vandalized, extorted, defrauded, embezzled, robbed, ....by them for a few weeks, days, hours, minutes, months or years, or decades

my best guess and estimation is that their are just a bunch of infantile, immature, irresponsible, chicken s--- coward terrorist gangster coward traitors stealing stuff from americans and america et al. and honest hard working folks, then running down to florida to launder the money they stole, buy hit men, stalkers, land/houses/cars/property/food/drugs/"businesses" for crime fronts to launder their money and continue their subversion, sedition, treason and treachery and send their kids to school so they can grow up to be bohemian, gypsy, hippy scum

in any case if you want the gig just let me know
private message me or post here

i may be busy for a while so there is no telling when i will get back to you

i don't even know how to type let alone use a computer

this project is nowhere near as difficult or complex as ya all seem to think it is

maybe a few hours of open source file / OS manipulation or reconfiguring of a simple OS/decompile/etc.

i'm trying to get on the nerves of the flaky weirdos who buy a computer and get online in an attempt to cause trouble

is it working???

: )

doesn't reality suck??

i already have 2 mp3 cd players and portable dvd player (7") and dvd standard dvd player

i will also be getting a blu ray player and larger tvs and larger portable dvd players 9" and 13" and decent headphones

my objective in the long run is to convert this laptop into a dedicated all format media cd/dvd/mp3cd player without any other function, possibly with an open source OS underneath or whatever works

i know for certain that it can be done

If you just want to use a laptop as a media server.

Look at serviio, http://www.serviio.org/

Or. Network media tanks. I think the popcorn hour has a blu ray player attached.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

Serviio you install to your pc, then if your tv has a network connection, connect it to your router.

You can get non network media players. Although most network media players do not have to be connected to a network.

Buy a Media player like Sumvision Micro media player, then connect a hard drive with movies to it, via the usb. You can play avi mkv's mp4's movies & music. directly on your tv.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sumvision-C...

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

i am after a media player to play back DVD and if possible mp3dvd discs
OFFLINE

this is a 300-400$ TOSHIBA SATELLITE LAPTOP

the hardware is extremely limiting
celeron, 2hour battery, 232GB HDD, 2GB RAM, clock speed etc. unknow
i just don't care
i'm thinking that this thing was ready for the scrap heap before it came off of the assembly line

this is definitely a hardware problem
i have my doubts that there is a software solution
(other than the monsterous project i mentioned above)
there is no rush
i have DVD players up and running
but i still want to convert this laptop to a dedicated LARGE (HUGE) screen portable DVD player eventually someday
