Is it possible to run Visual dbase 5.5 (16 bit version) under Windows 7 and what is needed to do so?

I think your best solution (and the only one if you are running 64-bit Windows) is to create a Virtual Machine (using, for example, VirtualBox), install Windows 95, 2000, or XP in that VM and install dBase there. If you have the Professional version of Windows 7 you can use XP Mode in the same way.

Thank you for your prompt answer. It looks like there is no short cut to make Visual dbase 5.5 run under Windows 7.
