Solved Want to upgrade my CPU

August 4, 2012 at 10:04:17
Specs: Windows 7
First my specs and I have upgraded some of the components:

HP Pavilion P6313w Desktop.

M2N78-LA (Motherboard)

AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 215 Processor 2.7 GHz ( I know not good for gaming)

Memory 8GB DDR3 (Upgraded)

GeForce GTX 560 SE (Upgraded)

450W Power supply (Upgraded)

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit.

I know I need to upgrade my CPU because certain games like Arma II lag to say the least. The question is, what can I upgrade to with my current mother board to play games like Arma II. From what I can see this exceeds what I need, but not sure--AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition AM3 CPU HDZ965FBGMBOX - 3.40GHz, Socket AM3, 6MB Cache, 2000MHz (4000 MT/s) FSB. First is this compatable without replacing my motherboard or can I do better? I wouldnt be against replacing the motherboard right now (recomendations?), but if I can get by without it for right now great. Thanks

Take phenom II X4 945.
Yes i agree CPU is weak but using norton is a mistake.
Use this http://filehippo.com/download_secur... & remove other bloatware.

Make model of the 450W unit? U are about to upgrade to 125W CPU.
U aren't going to take advantage of any Black Edition CPU.

I found a different link for that boards that shows the CPU upgrade is limited to 95W CPUs.

Black Editions CPUs were released for enthusiasts/overclockers. Your board cannot be overclocked plus as shown in the link above, 95W is the max. I highly doubt your CPU is the problem anyway. I suggest you look at the software. Are you still running Norton & the rest of HP pre-installed crapware? If you are, it's time to clean house.

HP Pavilion P6313w use M2N78-LA (Violet6)
HP Pavilion Elite e9120y use M2N78-LA (Violet3) (only 95W)
Open the link and look at the right side of the motherboard page.

I was on the HP page and saw the upgrades for the CPU, but wasnt sure if those were my best and only options I have. Out of this list what's my best CPU for this board then or what CPU do you guys recommend? The goal is to get better than what I have now, alot better if I can.

AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx Quad-Core (Deneb)
AMD Phenom II X3 7xx/7xxe Triple-Core (Heka)
AMD Phenom II X2 5xx (Callisto)
AMD Athlon X4 6xx/6xxe (Propus)
AMD Athlon X3 4xx/4xxe (Rana)
AMD Athlon X2 2xx/2xxe (Regor)

I also went to a site (CAN YOU RUN IT) where you can check to see if my computer will run games like Arma II which I have and it said my CPU was at the very minimum and recommended CPU needed is Intel Core i5 or AMD Athlon Phenom X4 or faster It must be correct because get I alot of lag when I play the game. I do have Norton Anti-Virus, but I dont see how that would cause the lag when playing the game or interfere with the speed of my computer since I have over 458GB of space available and 8GB of memory to play with.

Thanks..was thinking of this one, AMD FD4100WMGUSBX FX-4100 Processor - Quad Core, 8MB L3 Cache, 2MB L2 Cache, 3.60GHz (3.80GHz Max Turbo), Socket AM3+, 95W.

Since Im in the upgrading mood would it be worth looking into a Motherboard/CPU combo from Tiger Direct or somewhere?
