Upgrading CPU, Need help

April 28, 2010 at 22:05:44
Specs: Windows XP
I want to upgrade my CPU, I currently have a Pentium D 2.8GHz

Here is a page with details for my motherboard:
http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHER...

From what I understand the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 should be compatible, am I correct? Is this a good choice?

If not, any suggestions?

While newer versions of the i945 can run Core 2 CPUs, your 945G is one of the older, Netburst-only chipsets. You're stuck with the Pentium D, unfortunately.

Edit: Looks like I was wrong.
The 945G does support 65nm Core 2 Duos (but not the Core 2 Quad or 45nm Duo). You may have to update the BIOS for Core 2 support.

The Core2Duo would be a nice upgrade.

But you say I might have to update my BIOS, but my motherboard isn't listed on Intel's site, only on Gateways. I have the latest BIOS update from Gateway, but is there a possibility that Gateway hasn't released an update recent enough for Core2Duo?

Hard to say. Big OEMs typically lag behind the dedicated motherboard manufacturers when it comes to that kind of stuff. You may want to ask Gateway. Or try searching for your tower model+Core 2 Duo. You might find a user who's successfully installed a Core 2 Duo in that particular machine.
