Solved Upgrading AMD ML34 to ML40

Hi,

I want to upgrade my laptop's processor from a Turion 64 1.8GHz ML34 to a Turion 64 2.2GHz ML40, the only thing preventing me is the fact that the 1.8 is single channel memory and the 2.2 is dual channel.

Both require the same socket, are single core processors, and have like specifications other than the memory channels.

Will it work? Will it still work if I change the processor and not the memory?

Dual channel mode vs single channel mode has to do with capability of the memory controller, the memory itself is not single or dual channel. Regardless, both of the CPUs you mentioned support single channel mode only. I doubt you'll see a significant performance difference by upgrading the CPU. IMO, replacing the CPU will be a waste of time, effort, & money. Increasing the amount of RAM would be a better upgrade path.

Yip, the memory had been done and I did see an improvement. Just curious what 400 Mhz speed improvement can do. I suspect that you are right, that not much of an improvement will be notice but seeing how I am happy with what I have it probably couldn't hurt as well.

Thanks, I don't know where I read that the ml-40 was dual channel but I can see from the link you posted that it should replace the existing cpu with no problems.
