Thinking of Upgrading CPU

March 20, 2016 at 18:40:00
Specs: Win7, 3.108 GHz / 3327 MB
I currently have:
ASUS M4A78-EM
AMD Phenom II X2 550 @ 3.10 GHz
MSI R4830-T2D1G

Since I can't find much for AM3 processor online anymore, I'm thinking of upgrading my parts here and there to stay as current as possible without dishing out too much. I'm looking to upgrade the CPU to AMD Phenom II x6 1090T BE @ 3.2 GHz for C $158.36 (US $121.99). Also an SSD to boost loading times. I do some gaming like CS:GO and TF2 but nothing bigger then that. Remember, It isn't so much for computer power, more to get as high as I can without upgrading the mobo while the parts are still available.

Thanks.

Asus M4A78-EM
AMD Phenom II X2 550 @ 3.10
Patriot PC2-6400 4Gig
MSI R4830
Seagate 160Gig SATA
Seagate 320Gig SATA
External 1T

"I can't find much for AM3 processor online anymore"

Newegg has a ton of them, but they're listed as HP CPUs, not AMD.

Looking at your specs, the CPU is the least of your problems. You could use more RAM, you have an old Radeon HD 4000 series video card, & you already know the limitations of your HDDs.

The black edition X6 might be easier to overclock, but it's default clock speed is just 100MHz higher than your X2. It's also rated at 125W vs 80W for the X2. How many programs will actually take full advantage of 6 cores? I suggest you go for an X4 instead. If you're running Win7 64-bit, put the savings toward more RAM.

On the Canadian site, I only have a selection of 11 CPU's if I only click on AM3. It only shows me AMD. If I go through with it, I'll be getting the CPU off eBay along with the RAM for $50 cheaper for 4 sticks. Also, as I wrote this, I realized after my video card has been updated so I changed it. It's MSI R4830. Here's my new list.

CPU: AMD CPU Phenom II-X4 955 HDX955WFK4DGM 3.2GHz
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
RAM: G.Skill 4GB 2X2GB DDR2 PC2-6400 x2

Thanks for the reply.
