Overclocking my rig. Need suggestions!

January 25, 2010 at 10:59:12
Specs: Windows XP
Here's my PC specs (don't laugh!):

Pentium 4 Processor Hyper-Threaded @ 2793 MHz
Multiplier: x 14.0
CPU Bus Speed: 199.5 MHz
CPU Rated FSB: 798 MHz

4 sticks of 1 GB DDR RAM (PC3200)

ATI 4650 GRR3 512MB AGP Graphics Card

Since I'm pretty much clueless, I need the exact speeds that I should overclock my pc components to.

Forget it - it`s not gonna happen.....your board doesn`t seem to work even at 1066 MHZ (266 FSB)

I suggest getting a new motherboard which can work at 1600 MHZ (400 FSB) at least....

"I suggest getting a new motherboard which can work at 1600 MHZ (400 FSB) at least...."

He has a S478 CPU, DDR RAM & AGP video card, so upgrading to a board that can support 1600MHz FSB (400MHz frequency) would also require a new CPU, RAM, video card & probably a power supply too.

"I need the exact speeds that I should overclock my pc components to"

We can't give you exact speeds because overclocking isn't an exact science - it's trial & error. Unfortunately, your board doesn't support overclocking. Here's the motherboard manual:

After analyzing the OP`s system specs, I realized you are right.....even is he gets a good board, overclocking Pentium 4 is not always helpful....it`s based on the Netburst, so theoretically getting a 2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo based processor will be faster than P4 overclocked up to 5 GHz....

Also getting new RAM and PSU can help to overclock more....
