|For starters, running a 64-bit application on a 32 bit system is not going to work. That's probably not enough RAM to run what you're trying to do anyway. I'd go for at least 8gigs, especially for the RAM-hog Photoshop. Then you will need a 64-bit OS, that at least is a given. Generally, the 32-bit OS'es aren't typically that much cheaper than the 64-bit; and going with the 64-bit gives you the flexibility of future ram upgrades. You're probably not even using the top .5G of RAM on that 32-bit; I'm not sure if Win7 has better allocation or not than XP.|
If you're sure that the overheating issue is the problem, I must ask this question: Did you home-build this system? One of the biggest screwups in home-built systems is the improper application of the thermal paste that helps conduct the heat between the CPU and the heatsink. Even if it's an OEM (manufactured) system, that's no guarantee that it's applied correctly. It needs to fully cover the surface of the CPU with no air bubbles. There are generally a few different ways to do it; This seems to work:
With that in mind, it's also possible in a home-built system to get a heatsink that's too small for the CPU's TDP (Thermal Dissipated Power). for effective cooling of that CPU, which shows up as 125W, you should get a cooler with a good ball bearing fan that can dissipate about 140-150W and up. The cooler the better in this case, unless the fan size and noise becomes an issue.
That graphics card is a little wimpy for that CPU, too; and considering that you put the word 'Zotac' in front of it leads me to believe that it may be a Nvidia knock-off that has a chance of taking a crap on you in the next year or so. I don't want to alarm you, but that's just a heads-up that it could be of questionable quality. If you need to replace it, go for a genuine Nvidia or at least a MSI branded card..
In recap: Your RAM is too small for the rest of your components, and you need a 64-bit OS; There is a chance that the thermal paste on the CPU is bad and/or the cooler is undersized; and the graphics card could be a cheap knockoff.
