Motherboard cpu lockup message

Specs: winXP, Semprom socket A
I have a PC with ASUS Via KT600 socket A m/brd and the Bios intermittently at boot ups states that the CPU hung at the last boot up due to incorrect CPU settings, but the Sempron 2800 socket A is set at 166 at 12x clock multiplier, it did the same with the previous CPU which was a 2600 Athlon barton, which was set at 166 (i cannot remember its clock multiplier) which is now working perfectly in another PC. Could this be a motherboard faulty?

Sempron 2800+ (166 x 12) 2ghz, need ddr 333

athlon xp 2600+ (166 x 11.5) 1.9ghz, need ddr 333.

May be the board doesn't support 333 FSB CPU, better check CPU support list.

Try to lower sempron FSB to 133 and memory to 133 aka ddr 266.

Going from an Athlon XP 2600+ Barton to a Sempron 2800+ T-Bred is a downgrade due to the Sempron's smaller L2 cache. The minor 100MHz difference in clock speed could have been easily made up for by increasing the CPU frequency from 166MHz to 175MHz. Make sure you have the latest BIOS.
