marks on top of new cpu

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 3.1 GHz / 3071 MB
Just received a brand new boxed/sealed Phenom ii 965 125w processor (no phenom vs i5/i7 debates pls!)

When I opened it I first thought it had been used.

There are marks on the top of the heat spreader..if I tilt it at an angle to light abrasive marks can be seen in one direction. The centre is not matt like the rest but a small shinier quarter/half centimetre circle. On two opposite sides of the spreader, each have two tiny circles or blemishes as if the cpu was clamped or something. There is also a slight stain running off one edge.

I would take a guess & put this down to the manufacturing/testing stage. But since this new box (here in the UK) is only sealed at the top opening flap & not on the bottom where the corners are interlocked. (wouldn't be too hard to open/re-close it)Thought I'd ask for a 2nd opinion.

Bought from a reputable company via internet. (Dabs)

I've built a few systems in my time & can't remember seeing marks like this b4..(maybe I just never looked as close b4).

Tnx for any opinions! Andy

Sounds odd indeed. That def sounds like someone was testing it out on something and put it back in the box and resealed making it look like it wasn't opened and sold it like it was new. I'd def take it back, because who knows what it could have been tested for. AMD def doesn't make processors and send them off their lot like that. So it def sounds like someone outside of AMD was messing with it before they sold it.

Tnx for reply...reading back it probably sounds a lot worse than what it is. You have to angle the cpu just right to see the marks as they are very faint.

The processor is newish on the market being a revised 965 (as you may know) & I had to wait till the retailer had the pre-ordered cpu's finally in stock. I can't see how for instance it would have had time to be delivered/returned by someone else & the seal looks intact. Retailer could have tried it I suppose. I have heard how people get intel processors with scratches/slight marks on & is put down to testing b4 being shipped out. So still hoping you're wrong (no offence lol :) ) & I'm just being overly concerned.

On the positive side...£121 inc p&p is a steal at the moment.
