It sounds like your laptop battery might be dead AND the charger/cord is gone so battery is not charging and AC does not work due to no significant power to the unit. If someone you knows has the same brand laptop, try borrowing their cord for a few hours and see if that helps (if it does, purchase a new one).

The OP has written 2 responses, not to mention the original question, but so far, no mention of the make/model of the laptop. I guess that info's not important?

I still think it is related to power. Your spec sheet lists expected life of battery at 3 years and it is not uncommon for charger cords to have problems. The only thing else you can check that is probable is Memory and Hard Drive failure. To test memory, use a bootable CD with Memtest burned onto it, to test hard drive see if the manufacturer has a bootable hard drive utility you can download and burn to CD. If it cannot boot to CD, that leaves power and internal components like the motherboard that you will need to have tested by a technician. This is a fairly old laptop, so do not spend to much on fixing it, consider the alternative of removing the hard drive and attempting to save your files or have a technician do it for you (if you do not have a back up) and replace it (they may be able to include this service if purchasing a new one).

I have included a link to the spec sheet if anyone needs it:

Please turn off the caps lock. It's rude, difficult to read & is considered to be SHOUTING!

There wasn't much "gunk" on it because there's not supposed to be much on it. Here's the instructions to the "surface spread" method which should be used for a Mobile P4 CPU:
