IBM Dos 3.2 Wont' Boot from floppy

May 31, 2011 at 09:18:58
Specs: Dos 3.2, 486SLC
I get a disk boot failure when booting a 486SLC from the floppy using IBM Dos 3.2. The floppy will boot with Dos 5 etc but not 3.2. My other 486DX system will boot this floppy no problem. Note it is not a HD problem as it does not know if there is a HD yet.

The diskette drive may be the problem. Head drift. Try replacing the floppy drive or copy the DOS diskette and try again. Age of the medium may be an issue as well. Can you check this diskette with DOS 5 to verify readability?

My guess would be the floppy drive head alignment is different on the two machines. Back in the day I had all kinds of trouble with floppies from one machine being read on another.

Are you sure the computer is accessing the floppy drive and not skipping over it?

Well the same IBM Dos 3.2 diskette will boot on other computers but not this one. The same computer will boot other Dos versions e.g. Dos 5 and Dos 6.22 but not this one.

Also the boot up process is getting stuck looking for an operating system on the floppy (Disk Boot Failure) as I have changed the Bios to look for it in A:

Running IBM Dos 3.2 on a 486 SLC which is really a 386 is hardly overclocking. Yes ALL computers will read the file contents of this diskette, but the 486SLC will not boot from it.

"Running IBM Dos 3.2 on a 486 SLC which is really a 386 is hardly overclocking"

My comment was meant as a joke. What I was getting at is this - why are you asking DOS questions in the CPU/Overclocking forum? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to ask in the MS/PC-DOS forum?

Sorry - haha. Looked down the list for a DOS forum and didn't see it. All I saw was the CPU category and as the problem is getting a 486 to run Dos 3.3 - voila.

If i click on the tab General Forums - there is no Dos Forum. If i click on the tab Specialty Forums there is no Dos Forum. Funny or peculiar?

Well I installed a 1.2 floppy drive, booted IBM dos 3.2 successfully but it will not recognise C drive. Booting with Compaq Dos 3.1 recognizes C.
