high cpu usage, intelppm.sys highest usage

Specs: Windows XP, Pentium 4 3GHz
kernel module count
A few days ago, the cpu usage it's about 40-50 % all the time. That CPU's seems to run faster than normal, but the CPU's temperature it`s 63-64 °C, which I think it's normal for a P4 3.0 GHz processor.
I'm running WinXP Pro SP3, and a P4 3.0 GHz
The results from a Kernel Mode are shown bellow.
Module Hits msec %Total Events/Sec
intelppm 5054 16109 40 % 7843441
hal 4041 16109 32 % 6271339
ACPI 2089 16109 16 % 3241976
ntkrnlpa 1216 16109 9 % 1887143
win32k 63 16109 0 % 97771

Do a full system malware scan with something reliable like Norton Antivirus.

At 40-50% usage CPU temp is close to danger zone (max temp for Prescott is 69°C).
Norton isn't free better use the following
Security Essentials
http://filehippo.com/download_secur...
Or
Avast! Free Antivirus
http://filehippo.com/download_avast...
With
http://filehippo.com/download_malwa...
Make sure u update them first before running full system scan.

I have Avast! updated, and it doesn't find anything unusual.

Use Task Manager or install Process Explorer and see what processes is running in the background. Then type msconfig into run box and start it, go to the Start Tab and uncheck all except Microsoft and your antivirus program, Apply and restart the system. Recheck how it is doing.

Note that some antivirus software actually wastes valuable system resources, if you are using Norton or McAfee, uninstall and use Avast Free version or MS Security Essentials.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
