Help with unlock

December 20, 2010 at 06:10:04
Specs: Windows XP, 3.2/3.5
I bought a ASUS M4A78T-E and a Phenon II X2 555. If my understanding is correct I should be able to possibly unlock the other 2 cores. I understand there is a chance it might not work due to the fact that the cores could be damaged(corrupt, unstabble,etc.) What I need to know is; since its done through the Bios is there any need for an OS to find out if this is possible? And if so do you have to set the MB to OC, or is it done entirely in the bios?

To be able to unlock other 2 cores u need a board with amd chipset(atleast sb 710 or sb 750) and a proper bios support then look for this feature "ADVANCED CLOCK CALIBRATION (ACC)" in your bios.

Thank you for responding, I've read a couple different threads on it, and none of them specify if I have to install an OS first. In other words can find out if its possible before I go through the trouble of installing. I should have all required hardware(and BIOS) This is a brand new build and I can swap CPU's if need be.Also I don't want to fry it before I have a chance to use it so should I leave the MB"s OV_CPU jumpers at default. I have a M4A78-E and I've read about positive results. The only thing bothering me now is the known Win7 64 issue. But that's another story all together. Once again thank you for your input.

U don't need os to enable ACC, this feature is in BIOS but after enabling xtra cores u need to stress CPU with soft like PRIME95. This means u have to install a OS to be able to use PRIME95.
If u want to overclock CPU don't use any jumpers or software, u overclock cpu in BIOS(manual).
I posted a link in my first response, did u read it?

You don't have to install an OS, you don't even need a hard drive. The unlocking is done strictly thru the BIOS. If this is a system you're building, you can do it while benchtesting, assuming you benchtest, that is.

And again thank you for your feedback. I've managed to unlock both cores, but as my luck would have it I've stumbled upon another problem. I am, much to my dismay, not an expert. Despite all my effort and large amounts of time I pour into trying to learn, I always seem to be two steps behind.

I cant go into my BIOS? I did exactly what the manual told me and it just kept coming up with insert disk and press a key...So I put the disc in and rebooted, and it gave me three options;
1. ati raid/ahci x86_x64 xp driver
2. "" "" "" "" "" vista driver
3. freedos prompt

I choose 3(the second time because #1 didn't work) and now I'm looking at the directory with no idea what to do. Any thoughts as to why I couldn't go into the BIOS? I'm fresh out.....

Why do you need to update the BIOS? All you need to do to enter the BIOS is press the DEL key at the proper time. If you're seeing "insert disk and press a key...", you're not pressing DEL when you should. Either that or you're using a USB keyboard & USB legacy devices is disabled. Try using a PS/2 keyboard.
