CPU problem maybe?

Specs: Windows XP
My computers been running fine for ages, to day when I booted it up, after a few minutes it would completely shut itself down. I rebooted twice more to the same effect. I went in bios a everything seemed fine, but even in bios my computer would just shut down. On about the 5th reboot trying to recover a previous setting, after going through all the prelim booting up processes, my sign in page would not load up, just a black screen. I opened her up, noticed that the fan on the CPU was loose, one of the bracket things had somehow managed to break off. I Mcivored it back in place, nice and tight aginst the cpu. Rebooted again, still black screen, but at least no more random shut downs. I grabbed my windows disk, and tried booting from the disk still nothing but a black screen when it should be the login page? Should try a windows reinstal? is it that the CPU is over heating? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

You should probably remove the fan and heatsink, clean off the old thermal paste, apply a small amount of new thermal paste and reattach the HS/F.

"is it that the CPU is over heating?"

That would be my guess. Do as kx5m2g suggested.
