I went to bed the other night with the battery at 63%, the alarm did not go off at 7.00am because the battery was flat as a pancake! I was asleep for heaven's sake....what the?

Depending on which OS you have, in your setting, about phone, there should be something about your battery, and what is using it.

I would look at things like what apps were open at night, if your screen contrast was set to bright and it stayed on, the rate of email checking.
For example I know when I keep the kindle app open on my phone since the last update it syncs a lot more often, this can drain the battery.
Services that are running can also drain the battery.

Turn off wireless, gps, data, or anything else that doesn't make that thing a telephone. Using it as an alarm clock is fine, but they still sell alarm clocks at about any store too.

You can also try to disable things you don't need running in the background (Settings->Applications->Running Applications).
