You don't need to install the provided software when installing a combined router-modem if you are competent with knowing what cable goes where. I have used four different routers in as many years and I didn't install software for any of them.

The software is basically a step-by-step routine for those who don't feel comfortable setting it up without any help.

You just need to check that the router-modem you buy is compatible with your particular service provider, something you don't have to do when adding a router to an existing modem.

You don't need any software to configure a modem/router other than a web browser. If you really want the software you can download it from the manufacturer's web site. But, in your position, I would just spend the $15-20 that a new DVD drive costs.
