I can't find any reference to it being harmful, but some data plans do not allow tethering, in which case you will be charged per minute. So find out if tethering is included in your phone plan.

i mean to say that using the smartphones for 2-3 hours or more for usb tethering is harmful or not because due to manys apps we already uses them very much like for playing games, watching videos or for chatting we are on the go.

I've had no problems tethering my Ascend II and it's been working days at a time when away from home.

I usually keep it plugged in as battery life is only a few hours with data and wireless enabled.

I have 2 extra batteries (about 10 bucks) in case I need them.

My carrier charges an extra $10/month for tethering and service slows down after about 3Gb.

No ill effects yet unless you consider the damage to my wallet.

Since my last reply, phone has been tethered almost constantly. Phone is working fine and battery life is as usual...crappy with wireless and data turned on; good for a couple days with that stuff turned off.

If you need it, go for it.
