I recently became aware of the Blippar app. I went to download it and the notes about the app said it needs control of your camera and microphone as well as your media files. I didn't download it. It seems this app could very well spy on someone. Anybody familiar with this app? Is it safe? I have a Dell Venue 8 tablet running KitKat 4.4. Thanks.

Yes the app is safe. It asks if it can use your camera and know your location. It's not spying on you. It needs access to your camera to take pictures, it needs to know your location to make suggestions about relative activities in your area.

It's not real accurate though, I took a blip of my sunglasses and it thought it was a bowling ball, it thought an empty shotglass was an ice cube.

You didn't mention anything about why it needs access to the microphone. Regarding the objects it didn't recognize for you, the way the app is described, it looks like it will only recognize things that display the Blippar icon, like magazine articles and such.
